In 2014 Romeo Castellucci staged Orphée et Eurydice, of Gluck-Berlioz, a production that was acclaimed by critics and audiences, that responded to it in a strong empathic key. The fundamental elements of this production as well as their recurrence in the work of this influential theater director are identified, covering a period of more than two decades of his carrer, aspects that are reminiscent of deep cultural streams: the portrait of Renaissance, the deleuzian “close-up”, the cinematic travelling, early christian imagery, Greek art and culture; a network of references giving a particularly depth to Castellucci’s oeuvre. Warburg, Didi-Huberman, Freud and Deleuze, play a prominent role in the analysis undertaken.
